Pr. Koffi Herve Yangni-Angate

Pr. Koffi Herve Yangni-Angate stands out as a beacon in the realm of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, particularly in the challenging environments of developing nations. With an MD, MBA, and FWACM, he has navigated through complex medical terrains, actively contributing to congenital heart surgery advancements in Côte d’Ivoire and broader Africa. Dominique Vervoort, MD, MPH, CPH, MBA

Dr. Dominique Vervoort is a PhD Candidate in Health Services Research at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, focusing on Health Technology Assessment in cardiac surgery, and concurrently pursuing an MSt in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford. For his PhD, he has been awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Dr. Jack V. Tu Memorial Award for Excellence. He previously completed his MD at the KU Leuven and his MPH/MBA dual degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School as a Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation, and was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health in recognition of his global and public health work throughout the pandemic. Dominique completed the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship at the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard Medical School, working with Ministries of Health on National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plans (NSOAPs) in Pakistan and West Africa, and studying access to cardiac surgical care around the world.

Dominique has introduced the concept of global cardiac surgery to literature and established the Global Cardiac Surgery Initiative to advocate for the nearly six billion people worldwide without access to cardiac surgical care. In recognition of this, Dominique was named an Emerging Leader by the World Heart Federation. Clinically, as an aspiring cardiac surgeon, his interests lie in aortic and congenital heart surgery outcomes and disparities in accessing cardiac care.

Dominique is Co-Founder and Past Chair of InciSioN – International Student Surgical Network, the world’s largest global surgery trainee organization worldwide with over 8,000 members in over 100 countries. He has given lectures and facilitated workshops on youth engagement in global surgery at conferences around the world and represented the trainee voice in global surgery at high-level forums, such as the World Health Assembly, United Nations General Assembly, and Universal Health Coverage Forum. He serves as an Advisor for the Global Surgery Foundation, Advisor for the Johns Hopkins Global Surgery Initiative, Medical Advisory Board Member for the Global Alliance for Rheumatic and Congenital Hearts, and co-Founder of the Gender Equity Initiative in Global Surgery. Dominique has written widely on global and public health disparities, and has been featured in the New York Times, the BMJ, JAMA, Al Jazeera, Devex, and MedPage Today. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed publications in leading cardiovascular, surgical, and global health journals, and serves on the Editorial Board of multiple high-impact cardiovascular and health services research journals.

William M. Novick, M.D., M.S.

Paul Nemir, Jr., M.D., Professor of Surgery and International Child Health at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, Tennessee. He is a member of the Global Surgical Institute and Steering Committee Member of the Center for Multicultural and Global Health at UTHSC. Dr. Novick has been an active advocate and participant in overcoming the disparities in pediatric cardiac care since joining UTHSC in 1993. He founded 2 separate non-profits to provide pediatric cardiac care to children in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and has operated in over 30 countries and 50 institutions.

Dr. Aubyn Marath, MBBS MS FRCSEd Pediatric & Adult Cardiothoracic Surgeon President, CardioStart International

Born and educated in London, UK); he then went on to study Medicine at The Royal London Hospital, (University of London, UK). He represented the university first, as General Secretary of the Student Union, then as President of the London Medical Group (an ethical society).  He was editor of a student information journal until he qualified in medicine.  In sport, he has represented The Royal London Hospital rowing club and The Queen’s Club, England, in Tennis.

Following a full adult and pediatric general surgical training, he then completed training in heart and lung surgery, specializing in both adult and children’s problems.  During 1986-8, he conducted a scientific clinical research study into problems encountered in perfusion for children’s heart surgery at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith, UK, and was subsequently awarded Master of Surgery, degree – conferred by the University of London. His training and clinical experience has included The Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street, Guy’s hospital in London, & Dr. Albert Starr’s unit in Oregon, where he was Visiting Professor.  He gained further specialist pediatric cardiac training in the neonatal switch procedure at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, (the busiest and largest unit in the Southern Hemisphere).   First-hand medical war experience has been obtained when he was invited to set up a heart surgery unit in the Iran-Iraq war in 1987-8.

His research interests have included xeno-transplantation in Alberta, Canada, investigating new immuno-suppressants for future heart transplantation, and he has been involved in heart transplantation programs in four locations.  Dr. Marath is an instructor for the American Trauma Society, and currently he is a regular invitee as an ATLS Instructor for the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

CardioStart International, is a charity that he had conceived in 1987, which sets up heart surgical units and provides free instruction and initiation of children and adult heart surgery to underdeveloped countries seeking assistance.  Utilizing the support of colleagues from all over the world, volunteer teams representing CardioStart International Inc., have started or helped develop cardiac and intensive care units in 105 visits to 40 countries. During the last 25 years CardioStart has sent 54 shipping containers of donations of usable medical equipment valued at over $60 million.

Dr. Marath is an STS and WSPCHS member, and contributes as a guest editorial reviewer for The Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiology in the Young and the WSPCHS.

Dr Marcelo Cardarelli

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and graduated from University of Buenos Aires. After his initial training in cardiac surgery in Argentina, Dr. Cardarelli completed a series of residencies and fellowships at Texas Heart Institute, Children Hospital of Philadelphia, and Boston Children Hospital. Dr. Cardarelli was Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at University of Maryland Hospital for Children for nearly 18 years and staff pediatric cardiac surgeon at Inova Children Hospital until December 2022.

In 2006, Dr. Cardarelli obtained his master’s degree in public health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Alongside, his area of research has transitioned from purely clinical towards cost-effectiveness of health interventions and other aspects of health financing.

Since 2012 Dr. Cardarelli has worked as volunteer and staff surgeon in multiple surgical missions with Dr. Novick’s teams and in 2014 co-founded The William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance.

Professor Salvatore Lentini

Prof Salvatore Lentini is a Board certified adult and pediatric (mainly acquired) cardiac surgeon. He trained in London (UK) with Mr Donald Ross and Prof Magdy Yacoub, then completed a two years fellowship at Laval University in Canada with Dr Paul Cartier Jr, before to come back to practice in Italy, his home country. He has an Academic backgroung with University teaching appointments and more than 100 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), where he served as Nucleus Member of the Cardiovascular Surgery domain; Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC); Fellow of the International College of Surgeons(FICS) and Fellow of ANMCO. His areas of interest and research ranges between several topics: from Aortic Surgery and Surgery for complications of ischemic heart disease to rheumatic heart valve disease especially in children. During the last few years, Professor Lentini served as Head of Cardiac Surgery at the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan. The Salam Centre an International cardiac tertiary care Istitution with referrals from more than 30 different countries, and devoted to the treatment of rheumatic heart valve disease both in children and adults. Professor Lentini is presently the Chairman of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Policlinic University Hospital at Catania University, Catania, Italy, and Professor (contract) of Cardiac Surgery at the same University.
