Dr. Aubyn Marath is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in pediatric and adult heart and lung surgery. Educated at The Royal London Hospital (University of London), he earned a Master of Surgery degree for his groundbreaking research on perfusion in children’s heart surgery. His extensive training spans leading institutions, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, and Dr. Albert Starr’s unit in Oregon.

As the founder of CardioStart International, Dr. Marath has pioneered initiatives to establish cardiac surgery programs in 40 countries, delivering life-saving care and medical training while donating over $60 million in medical supplies. With experience in heart transplantation and trauma instruction, he also serves as an ATLS Instructor at the Mayo Clinic and contributes as a guest editorial reviewer for global cardiovascular journals.

Dominique Vervoort, MD, MPH, CPH, MBA

Dr. Dominique Vervoort is a PhD Candidate in Health Services Research at the University of Toronto, focusing on Health Technology Assessment in cardiac surgery, and an MSt candidate in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford. A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar, Dominique has introduced the concept of global cardiac surgery and co-founded the Global Cardiac Surgery Initiative, advocating for equitable access to cardiac care worldwide.

A recipient of numerous awards, he completed his MD at KU Leuven and an MPH/MBA at Johns Hopkins, where he was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society. Dominique has worked with global Ministries of Health on surgical care plans, served as Co-Founder and Chair of InciSioN, and contributed extensively to global surgery through over 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Recognized as an Emerging Leader by the World Heart Federation, Dominique is a passionate advocate for health equity, youth engagement, and advancing cardiac surgical care globally.

Evarist TM Nyawawa (MD, MMED,FCTVS) Senior Medical Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon

Dr. Evarist TM Nyawawa is a Tanzanian native. After completion of primary
and secondary education in 1991, he was admitted to the Medical School at
the University of Dar es Salaam and completed undergraduate with an
award of Doctor of Medicine (MD) in the year 1996. Thereafter, he underwent
a compulsory one year Internship at Bugando Medical Centre, referral and
zonal Hospital situated in the Northwest around Lake Victoria in the Country.
In the year 1999 was admitted at the same university and underwent
postgraduate training in general surgery with award of Master of Medicine in
surgery 2002. He worked as a general surgeon at Muhimbili National Hospital
till the year 2005 when he was identified as a potential candidate to undergo
training in cardiothoracic surgery. Towards the end of the year 2005,
together with other 25 staff of different cadres, he underwent training in
cardiothoracic surgery at Care Institute of Medical Sciences, in Hyderabad,
India, a two year program for which he completed in 2008 with award of
fellowship in cardiothoracic Surgery.
His return to Tanzania, has been fruitful to the country: he was very
innovative in his surgical techniques and he is among the founder of
cardiothoracic surgical activities in the country. His initiatives and focuses
have enabled us today to have one of the most advanced institutes of
Cardiac Surgery in the east and central regions of Africa; “The Jakaya
Kikwete Cardiac Institute.” In the year 2019 he was identified as a potential
surgeon to train more in coronary revascularization, a short course which he
did at University Hospital of Marnhao, in Sao Luis Brazil. The return of Dr
Nyawawa after this training was a ignition to start coronary
revascularization, a surgical procedure that was a challenging at that
particular time, but today it has become a routine procedure.
Throughout, Dr Nyawawa has remained focused and innovative in the
surgical field of cardiothoracic surgery. He has mentored and supervised
many subordinates. He has been the head of adult cardiothoracic surgery
from 2014 to date and recently he was appointed to be the program director
for COSECSA for students undergoing training in cardiothoracic surgery at
the institute. He has made several publications in both local and
international journals.
